The Housing & Development Board’s (HDB) My Waterway@Punggol has won the Gold award at the FIABCI Prix d’Excellence Awards 2013.
A green oasis for the community to take part in enjoyable events and family outings
2Competing in the Public Infrastructures/Amenities Category, the HDB is the only public agency this year to clinch the coveted global award at the FIABCI Prix d’Excellence Awards Ceremony, held on 27 May 2013 in Taichung, Taiwan.
3Considered the "Oscars" of the real estate industry, the Prix d'Excellence recognises outstanding projects that best embody excellence in all real estate disciplines. The projects are evaluated on architecture and design, development and construction, community benefit, and environmental impact. HDB’s winning of the award therefore is testament of the Waterway’s community value and positive impact on the urban landscape.
4HDB worked with various government agencies to conceptualise a 4.2km landscaped waterway that would meander through the town and integrate seamlessly with surrounding developments, creating a waterfront living experience with amenities and communal space for 21,000 homes along the Waterway.

5Flanked by two rivers which were dammed to form two new reservoirs to increase Singapore’s water catchment area, the Waterway was borne out of a need to build an underground pipeline to transfer water between both reservoirs. Through innovative planning, creative design and novel building techniques, the Waterway has transformed Punggol into a vibrant waterfront town replete with sustainability features that help promote greater biodiversity and enhance the water quality.
6Today, My Waterway@Punggol is touted by some as “the Venice of Singapore” due to its flowing waters, greenery and natural charm. Befitting the vision of ‘Green Living by the Waters’, its wide promenades are integrated with the adjoining housing sites, creating interlinked multiple green spaces and opportunities for leisure, recreational and educational activities for the entire community to enjoy.
7Heritage elements featured on its Heartwave Wall and the five distinctive waterway bridges echo Punggol’s past and point to Punggol’s future developments.
8Today, Punggol town is at its halfway development mark. Working together with partner agencies such as URA, NParks, LTA and PUB, HDB’s vision for the next phase of Punggol’s development will be guided by five new key ideas:
a) Signature Waterfront Housing Districts in seven different districts
b) Punggol Downtown: A New Destination for leisure and recreation in the North-East
c) An Even Greener Punggol with more parks and green corridors for all to enjoy
d) Great Places for the Community in the development of a new Town Square, community facilities and hawker centre
e) Moving around Punggol with enhanced transport infrastructure and the provision of cycling tracks to encourage eco-commuting.
9Dr Cheong Koon Hean, Chief Executive Officer of HDB, said, “HDB is honoured to win this prestigious international award and be in the company of other world-class organisations and their projects. My Waterway@Punggol is a testament of HDB’s commitment to create vibrant and sustainable towns, housing active and cohesive communities. Many in Punggol have told us how much they enjoy and appreciate the Waterway and the surrounding amenities. We will continue to do our best to enhance the living environment for our residents.”
